Hackathon Glossary

In the hackathonic ecosystem, some words are more constant than others. With that in mind, we put together a brief glossary of the most commonly used words in this universe that we love to love.

Big Data: This term is used to describe a large amount of data – structured or unstructured – that overloads businesses on a daily basis. But it has more to do with what they do with this data than with their quantity. Big data can be analyzed to generate ideas, better business strategies, and solutions worthy of hackathon trophies.

Blockchain: It’s the protocol of trust, a distributed logging technology that uses decentralization as a security measure. As if each digit of a very valuable password was distributed among thousands of people, making transactions depend on all of them to be carried out. Besides, everything that is written into a blockchain remains forever.

Brainstorming: Is that little meeting where everyone in the group collaborates with suggestions for the project. A moment where all ideas are valid and the most pertinent ones are compiled and included in the project.

Code review: ensures the quality of the codes the group has submitted for judgment. Usually, the schedule of a hackathon has a specific time for code review, which is usually done before the pitch and with a member of the event organizing team. After all, marathon fatigue can make the team miss some silly mistakes.

Decompression: dictionary describes: the act or effect of decompression, to relieve what is under pressure or compression. At hackathons, the moment of decompression is that pause to take a break, do a little dance, forget about so much coding and programming, interact a little with the rest of the crowd and give your brain a break – which helps a lot to make room for new ideas!

Dev: This one is very basic! Dev is short for “developer”, translating the good old developers! Most of the time, teams are built with two devs. Perhaps that is why the nomenclature is so mentioned during the hackathons.

Gamification: To “gamify” is to place game elements in situations that are not as playful as, for example, “business”. Most of the times, they are added to technical situations turning them into a competition or rewarding participants for “passing the phase”.

GitHub: This is the platform used by developers to host the main source code for projects still under development. It also allows registered users to contribute to other projects (private and/or Open Source) from anywhere in the world! Oh! And you also can give a publicized at work.

Hub: This is what connects computers on a network and allows the transmission of information between them.

Intellectual Property: In short, intellectual property is the author’s protection of its creation. But if you want to go deeper into the subject, we’ve done a whole article explaining what it’s all about. You can check it out here.

Insight: When an idea comes with everything, you know? That sudden snap. The famous “Eureka!”

Meetup: is one of the ramifications of networking. Relationship with the community is very important and if you have content, food, and interesting people, it’s easy, right? So meetup is that!

Mentoring: Have you watched Karate Kid? In the movie, Mr. Myiagi can be considered a mentor to Daniel San. In a hackathon, all participants are little grasshoppers and it is the job of mentors to guide them along the wisest path. This moment of reflection and learning is called mentoring.

MVP: Abbreviation of Minimum Viable Product, MVP is nothing more than a type of test. In a hackathon, it’s the prototype you deliver from your project. But is also used by large companies to test a new product/service before making major investments in it.

Networking: that business card exchange that can yield an incredible meeting, partnership and projects. Networking is to know and to be known. Set up a net of valuable and powerful contacts!

Open Source: A source code for software that can be used and/or adapted for different purposes. Most of the time, they are tools that can be shared online by their developers, giving anyone access without restrictions. A collaborative model that led the author’s right to be viewed from another perspective.

Pitch: Widely used in the hackathon universe and startups in general, this short word has a huge weight. Pitch is a quick presentation of a product, service or business. Pitch serves to sell your idea as the best and most efficient of the competition. This is the time when you explain what the purpose of your project is, what market it will work in, and what problem it will solve.

In hackathons, it usually lasts three to five minutes. Enough time to ensure a good evaluation.
